TL;DR: Camaro Turbo 6-speed, Bolt or Volt?

The time has come for my father to turn in his leased 2015 Volt. It has had zero problems (apart from the drivers side window motor) and was a fantastic car to drive. Because he’s a loyal Chevy fan he is going to look at the three cars mentioned in the title. It all comes down to the driving experience and what sort of deal we get.

The inner Jalop in me would say to get the Camaro (it would be a Jalop spec 1LS with the turbo and 6-speed) since that’ll be the quickest, most fun and possibly the cheapest option. The only drawbacks would be that it’s rear-driven and takes premium but with gas prices being the way they are, it won’t matter. It wouldn’t be hard to get a killer deal on one.

We’re both intrigued by the Bolt. The only real concern would be charging but he would easily be able to charge at home overnight. He also thinks it’s ugly. I for one think it’s interesting.

The Volt would be the logical choice, especially since the second generation is much improved over the old one.

I was going to suggest a good car, but then I saw he is a die-hard Chevy fan. Hopefully you guys find something good out there!

Bolt or Camaro. They are speaking of killing the Volt and if that affected any sort of replacement part supply you wouldn’t want to be in that position.

Lease or buy? You don’t specify.

Lease, small possibility I could buy it off of him when his lease is up however.

You come here and expect to be told something other than Camaro?

Really? I haven’t heard of any rumors about that... He is going to lease the car for 3 years so I doubt there would be any issues.

What were you going to suggest? Just curious.

RWD is a bad thing?

I would check out Colorados. Diesel, Z71, Redline, other special editions, maybe a leftover Trail Boss, ZR2...

Make sure that the Bolt’s seats agree with your dad. They’re really built for skinnier people, and the seat frames are too narrow for heavier-set people. (Also, make sure that the specific car he’s interested in buying agrees with your dad - there’s variability between individual cars on this front.)

I’ve not driven a Gen 1 Volt, but I really didn’t like the Gen 2's suspension tuning, interior ergonomics, or outward visibility.

Then again, if you’re considering a Camaro, you don’t give a fuck about outward visibility.

Oh I’m aware of that. I wonder if this meme is sorta relevant.

Good suggestion but he is annoyed that you can’t get a crew cab duramax ZR2 with a stick. He also doesn’t need a truck.

I wasn’t very impressed by my 1ls/turbo/6mt Camaro test drive. Average all around with better power, still doesn’t FEEL fast.

I promise that makes sense.

The first Volt’s ergonomics are probably much, much worse than the current one. The touch-sensitive center stack is so dumb, the shifter is stupid and I hate the seats. Even my Hyundai’s seats are at least somewhat comfortable.

Don’t know about the Bolt, I’ve never sat in one.

And who cares about the Camaro’s visibility, the cool factor makes it irrelevant.

For someone who is probably not interested in doing a whole lot of work, and wanting durability, low depreciation, and good resale value, something Toyota or Honda. More so Toyota.

Of those three, I’d go Volt. If you get the Camaro, at least spring for the V6 - it’s a much better option than the 4-cylinder turbo. Chevy did it the opposite way from Ford.

My dad has had an Alfa Romeo Spider so none of those things matter. Except for leasing, he typically drives cars until they die.

I haven’t been able to find but one 6-speed 2.0T Camaro. Deals may be had on autos, maybe not on mannies.

When we drive the 4 and V6 back to back, we’ll know. Right now the only advantage I can think over the turbo would be the sound, GM 4-cylinders sound weak.

I assume this is supposed to be his reliable, everyday practical car? I have a Mazda 3i sport hatch that works great for that. I’d go with the 2.5L if I bought it again though. The 2.0L is kinda slow, but I get 42 mpg most road trips.

This will be his everyday car, it doesn’t need to be very practical since there’s a 2005 Pilot that can handle bigger tasks.

Nice. Everywhere I’ve gone they have V6 mannies and SS Mannies and 2.0T autos

One shop did try to give me 12 grand off an SS1 mannie vert. I really really wanted to pull that trigger; the new Camero looks so good with the top down
